As an important part of Coastal High-speed Railway of National High-speed Rail Network, Shenzhen-Maoming section is connected with Xiamen-Shenzhen High-speed Rail, starting from Shenzhen North Railway Station, through Dongguan and Guangzhou, crossing Zhongshan and reaching Jiangmen, Yangjiang, Maoming. It is a key belt linking PRD with YRD and Bohai Gulf Economic Circle, and is also one of the fastest channels joining eastern and western bank of PRD.

Chen says that Jiangmen-Maoming section has begun construction since June, 2014 and is expected to open to traffic in 2018. The delay of Shenzhen-Zhongshan-Jiangmen section will cause the suspension of the channel.
