The first art gallery in Zhongshan came into being. Situated in the picturesque Qijiang Park, Zhongshan Art Gallery not only constitutes the main architecture of the park, but also provides a paradise for art fans.

The gallery is located in the center of the park. Designed by architects graduating from Harvard University, the two-storey steel-framed architecture fits right in the park no matter in terms of shape or color. The park was established on the original site of Yuezhong Shipyard and remained the industrial characteristics in its design. The steel frames and the yellow walls, together with substantial ground glass, provide the gallery a style that goes perfectly with that of the park.

The gallery has a construction area of 2500 square meters and an exhibition area of 2000 square meters. With a large number of pipelines and steel bars being used in its construction, the gallery looks like a factory at first sight. But when you come inside, the grand exhibit hall, the moveable exhibit board, the uniquely-designed collection rooms and the training rooms all provide a strong modern element to the gallery.

The gallery aims to be a national cultural institution open to the public with functions like collection, exhibition, visiting, education, research and exchange. The gallery is to elevate the cultural taste, promote the development of culture and art and stimulate the progress of industrial design, package design, fashion design, environment design and advertising art in Zhongshan.
To celebrate the opening of Zhongshan Art Gallery as well as to demonstrate the artistic achievements Zhongshan people made, the Municipal Culture Bureau held an exhibition of painting and calligraphy works by Zhongshan-origin artist, an exhibition of cartoons by Zhongshan-origin cartoonists as well as an exhibiton of works by world-known cartoonists like Huang Miaozi, Te Wei, Fang Cheng, Jiang Yousheng, and Fang Tang.

In the comtemporary art history, a large number of influential painters and calligraphers came from Zhongshan. Now Zhongshan has about 3000 people involved in painting, calligraphy or design and more than 100 art exhibits are held every year. Zhongshan Art Gallery, with its high level research ability, quality exhibition, and efficient promotion, is to become an important base for artistic collection, research, and demonstration. And it will also provide an exchange center for artists as well as a propaganda window to display Zhongshan culture and art.
