International animal taxonomy journal ZooKeys lately published a paper reporting three new species of cockroaches first discovered and named by the Zhongshan Customs research team, including Nocticola baiguensis, Nocticola cordiformis and Nocticola appendiculata.
In 2024, the Zhongshan Customs research team, together with researchers and science exploration enthusiasts from Guilin, Guangxi, conducted an investigation into cockroaches inhabiting local karst caves. During the investigation, they for the first time observed a symbiosis between cave-dwelling cockroaches and a certain species of ants.
In the paper, the research team provided details of the characteristics of taxonomic identification and life habits of the new species.
